Energy Savings vs. Energy Producing...

I was listening to an online "webinar" regarding Green building from a local architect, Peter Pfeiffer. It was a great 48 minute lesson on green building and what is most beneficial. He talked about some solar panels on his house, being $26K worth of solar panels. He said it saves him from $35 to $45 a month. It would take about 10 years to pay off the system, possibly. (EDIT: the city and government rebates paid for 20K and he only had to play 6K. So, imagine how long it would take to pay 26K with a $45 a month savings.) At that time the technology would be outdated and also may require some repairs/maintenance. However, putting $26K into energy efficient (saving) products will pay off more than possibly $35 to $45 a month. Therefore, energy savings makes more sense than energy producing. A worthwhile thought.
